Demolition of Phoenix AZ homes in Ahwatukee on or too near new 202 Extension/I 10 Bypass called the South Mountain Freeway.
The South Mountain Freeway is the Phoenix Arizona southwestern 202 extension along Pecos Road from I 10 around South Mountain and connecting at I 10 near 59th Avenue has begun. The Gila River Indian Reservation was not as generous as the Salt River Reservation had been when they allowed the 101 Loop to be built on their reservation land. Therefore, this 202 extender is to built along Pecos Road and north of the current roadway, but not on the Gila River Reservation, requiring hundreds of existing homes in Ahwatukee (Phoenix AZ area) to be razed. This video shows one of 73 homes out of 84 homes in Goldman Ranch being taken down to the foundation in an hour. This is particularly captivating, given the months of waiting for a home in Gilbert to be built at this time.
Some detractors who hoped they could salvage items from these condemned homes to raise money for charity, condemned public officials who would not agree to their demands, even though the winning bidder reduced their bid for the right to salvage everything they could from these homes to offset the cost of demolition and removal.
Several events have occurred that will accelerate the building of this bypass. $1.4B has already been earmarked for settlement for those whose homes were seized through eminent domain so road construction could occur and a bid was received to build the road and maintain it for 30 years. There will be a great saving to the taxpayer not to have to pay for 30 years of road maintenance and this should also ensure the highest quality materials and engineering will be employed to reduce road maintenance cost. Finally, we are building roads like they do in Europe to last as they do in Europe!
